Affirmative Action Definition and Reaction
Underrepresenting/misrepresenting or benefitting a group based on considerations due to race, color, religion, gender, etc.
I believe that affirmative actions can be good/needed but also there are many cases where it is not needed. There are most definitely specific cases where races, genders, or religions may be at a disadvantage and it can be a good thing. For example, I believe that overall African-Americans (as a whole) do not get the same high school education than caucasions because of poor areas and such. Therefore, I believe that affirmative action is beneficial in terms of college admissions because there is no question that a diverse campus is beneficial for all students whether they know it or not. I believe it is imperrative to have a fair representations of various races, backgrounds, and religions (or lack thereof) at a college. I also believe affirmative action is necessary for homosexuals. The biggest problems with discrimination of homosexuals is that most Americans do not know homosexuals. Many human beings tend to dislike things that seem weird or that they cannot understand. If people were around homosexuals more they would realize how clean, nice, proper, and normal these people are and it would cut down on discrimination. In a February 28, 2012 article in the San Francisco Chronicle a UCSF administrator stated, "Using only high-school grades and standardized tests would give us a freshman class with far more women than men." This is an example of where affirmative action is beneficial because the ratio of men and women should be around even. There is still way too much prejudice in the world currently and affirmative action will most certainly help to somewhat counter-act that.
